Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy is the leading state university in Ukraine for the training of doctors and dentists. It is an award winning state higher educational institution.

The Academy began in 1921 as the odontology department of the Kharkiv Medical Academy. In 1967 it moved to Poltava, renamed as the Poltava Medical and Dental Institute. In 1994 it gained the highest (IVth) level of accreditation and with its higher status was renamed Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy.

In 2014, the IVth accreditation level was re-confirmed by the Accreditation Commission of Ukraine.

Currently there are 4249 students enrolled at the Academy; 764 from 46 other countries. Departments include: Dental Faculty, Medical Faculties №1, and №2 (Paediatrics), the Faculty for Foreign Students Training, the Department of Pre-University Training and the Faculty of Postgraduate Education. There is also a college within the Academy that trains students for bachelors degrees and as junior medical specialists. The Pharmaceutical division has operated since 2008, and in 2012 launched the extramural training of junior pharmacists.

The Academy has 53 departments in all, including support departments. Clinical and consulting work is performed at 39 clinical departments of the Academy, located in the best regional and municipal hospitals of Poltava.

The Academy trains specialists in:

1. Dentistry (7.12010005) – 5 year course;

2. General Medicine (7.12010001) – 6 year course;

3. Pediatrics (7.12010002) – 6 year course;

4. Nursing (5.12010102) – 3 year course;

5. Prosthetic Dentistry (5.12010106) – 2 year course;

6. Pharmacy (5.12020101) – 2 year full-time course;

7. Pharmacy (5.12020101) – 3 year extra-mural course.

There are full-time course of study and extramural studies (pharmacy) at the Academy.

The scientific capability of the Academy comprises 90 Doctors, 367 Candidates of Science, 81 Professors, 196 Associate Professors, 2 Laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine, 5 Honoured Workers of Science and Technology of Ukraine, 4 Honoured Physicians of Ukraine, and 1 Honoured Innovator.

The Academy participates frequently at prestigious international exhibitions such as “Modern Education in Ukraine”, “Innovation in Modern Education”, “Education and Career”, to represent the university’s achievements in education, scientific and methodological innovations, modern IT systems, and multimedia training. At these exhibitions, the Academy was awarded a gold medal for the 2013-14 academic year, and has won three Grand Prizes and many diplomas. The Academy has been awarded the honorary titles of “Leader of National Education” and “Leader of Scientific and Technological Activities”.

Ukraine, as a member of the UN and UNESCO, is actively involved in international higher education programmes. In this context, Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy also helps foreign countries in preparing their national medical staff. In 1992 the Faculty for Foreign Students Training began providing assistance in improving medical training in other countries. The academy is currently training 764 students from 46 countries including Algeria, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Russia, Syria and Turkmenistan. These students are guaranteed all the rights and freedoms under the current legislation of Ukraine.

Training for foreigners is in accordance with the curriculum and programmes of Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Ministry of Public Health. Foreign students have at their disposal classrooms, reading rooms, libraries, and sports facilities on equal terms with Ukrainian citizens. Foreign students also have specially allotted areas for cultural and religious activities, and community meetings. During the initial stages of training, courses are conducted by teachers with extensive expertise of working with foreign students.

In 2011, Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy celebrated the 90th anniversary of its founding. Over the course of these 90 years, the Academy has trained 28,700 dentists, 12,000 doctors and 1,600 nursing specialists.

The Academy has taken an important step towards joining the European educational space. The Academy awards diplomas of international standard and enables its graduates to become recognised and competitive specialists in any country of the world.
