UKRAINIAN MEDICAL STOMATOLOGICAL ACADEMY

The Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy is one of the oldest leading higher educational establishments in Ukraine, which traces back its history to the Faculty of Odontology, which was established at the Kharkiv Medical Academy in 1921. The faculty became the first academic specialized educational establishment for the training of dental practitioners. In 1931 the faculty was reorganized into the Kharkiv Dental Institute, which in 1967 was transferred to the city of Poltava.

In 1994, by the decision of the Interdepartmental Accreditation Commission and the order of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, the educational institution was accredited with the highest, fourth level of accreditation. In the same year, by the order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, it was reorganized into the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy. By the letter from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 02.08.1994, the Academy opened the Faculty of Nursing; in 1995 - the dental department, which in 2005 evolved into a medical college.

According to the decision of the State Accreditation Committee of Ukraine as of April 11, 2000, the Academy received a license for the right of training specialists in the field of "Pediatrics".

According to the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine No. 133 as of March 28, 2005, the name of the educational establishment was changed to "Higher State Educational Establishment of Ukraine "Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy".

According to the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine № 349 as of 09.6.2018, Higher State Educational Establishment of Ukraine "Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy" was renamed into the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy.

The Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy conducts undergraduate training of specialists at 4 faculties: Dental, Medical №1, Medical №2, the Faculty of Foreign Students` Training; the Faculty of Postgraduate Education - on the basis of the educational-scientific institute of postgraduate education; training for applying to higher educational establishments - at the preparatory department and the preparatory department for foreign citizens. The medical college has a medical and pharmaceutical department.

The Academy has 55 departments. According to the order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine № 532 as of August 23, 2011 - 11 departments of the Academy received the status of basic. Clinical training of students, interns and students of the educational and scientific institute of postgraduate education is carried out at 39 clinical departments located on the medical bases of the Poltava region. The Training and Scientific Medical Dental Center, where leading specialists of the Academy provide multidisciplinary advisory and medical dental aid for people from the city and region was created.

The Academy has created a Practical Training Center, which consists of 7 practical training centers, where students of all faculties and interns have the opportunity to prepare for state attestation.

The Academy employs 92 Doctors of Sciences, 408 PhDs; 82 persons who have the academic rank of Professor, 226 persons who have the academic rank of Associate Professor. Among the scientific and pedagogical workers of the Academy there are 6 Laureates of the State Award, 10 Honored Doctors of Ukraine, 6 Honored Scientists and Technicians of Ukraine, 1 Honored Worker of Public Health of Ukraine , 1 Honored Rationalizer of Ukraine, 2 Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine.

In order to implement the state policy in the field of higher education, the Academy has a Scientific and Methodological Laboratory for Dental Training of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

In accordance with the license issued by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 1352-l as of June 21, 2018), the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy conducts training of specialists in the following programs:

- Master:

• Dentistry (221, 5 year course)

• Medicine (222, 6 year course)

• Pediatrics (228, 6 year course)

- Specialist:

• Dentistry (7.12010005, 5 year course)

• General Medicine (7.12010001, 6 year course)

• Pediatrics (7.12010002, 6 year course)

- Junior specialists

• Nursing (223, 3 year course - on the basis of complete secondary education, 4 year course - on the basis of basic general secondary education)

• Pharmacy, industrial pharmacy (226, full-time form - 2 year course, on the basis of complete secondary education; 3 year course - on the basis of basic general secondary education, distance - 3 year course on the basis of complete secondary education)

The Academy provides:

    • Preparatory training of Ukrainian citizens for admission to higher educational establishments;

    • Preparatory training of foreign citizens for admission to higher educational establishments;

    • Advanced training (specialization) in the basic fields (specialties);

    • Training of specialists in clinical residency (postgraduate training of doctors);

    • Training of foreign citizens and stateless persons in accredited areas (specialties): 221 Dentistry; 222 Medicine; 223 Nursing; 221 Dentistry (junior specialist); 226 Pharmacy, industrial pharmacy.

    • Training of foreign citizens in internship (primary postgraduate specialization);

    • Training of foreign citizens in clinical residency.

Currently, more than 5,200 students study at the Academy, including 5072 students - full time study form, 1326 foreign students, 194 persons in distance form of training.

In 2017, the Academy successfully passed the supervisory audit according to the certification system of quality management (standard DSTU ISO 9001: 2015 "Quality Management Systems. Requirements.").

The Academy introduced an information system for monitoring of the attendance of classes and students' progress - the "Electronic Journal", which provides open access to the current and final results of academic achievements, the processing of missed classes and unsatisfactory assessments of students. To organize the elimination of academic debt in the Academy there are 3 electronic centers and an extensive test base has been created.

The Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy is a regular participant in prestigious international and national exhibitions: "Modern Educational Establishments", "Education and Career", "Innovation in Modern Education", which were repeatedly awarded the Grand prize, gold medals, diplomas; was awarded the honorary titles of "Leader of higher education of Ukraine", "Leader of scientific and technical activity", "Leader of international activity", etc.

In 2018, the Academy took part in the ranking of the institutions of higher education of Ukraine "Top 200 Ukraine" and ranked 53rd among 200 universities of Ukraine.

The research work at the Academy meets the needs of the present. More than 100 research works are being carried out, 2 of which are funded by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy is included in the State Register of Scientific Institutions, which are supported by the state.

Over the past two years, 105 patents, 57 newsletters, 63 innovations have been gained. The scientific results of the Academy's employees are published in more than 700 articles each year, more than 200 of which are published in international periodical scientific journals. The rating in Scopus and Web of Science databases has grown significantly.

International cooperation is one of the leading activities of the Academy, which is aimed at creating conditions for cooperation with foreign institutions of higher education. In order to promote the academic mobility, partnerships between the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy and medical universities participating in the MEDEA project to exchange students and academic faculty within the framework of the Erasmus program have been established. The Academy signed agreements on cooperation with educational establishments of Austria, Belarus, Armenia, Great Britain, Greece, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Tajikistan.

In 2018, the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy joined the Magna Charta Universitatum. Training of foreign citizens is conducted in accordance with the curricula and programs of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Foreign students, on an equal basis with Ukrainian students, use classrooms, reading rooms and libraries; they also have premises for conducting cultural, religious events and other gatherings. The teaching process is provided by teachers who have special training and extensive experience working with foreign citizens at the initial stages of their training. Upon graduation, foreign students receive diplomas of an international standard.

Much attention is paid to the material and technical provision of the educational process. The Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy has 5 academic buildings, which house departments, lecture and laboratory classrooms, computer classes, library, administrative premises; sports and health complex, dining room, household building, vivarium, hangars. There is a first aid centre whose employees provide urgent medical care and conduct preventive examinations. Students of the Academy live in 4 dormitories, which form a residential complex. In the summer, the Academy operates a sports camp for students, staff and teachers.

The Centre for the management of educational and humanitarian work with youth helps to uncover the creative potential of students, which contributes to the implementation of state policy in the field of education and culture, adhering to the principles of humanism and democracy, the priority of universal values and morals.

In 2021 the Academy will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The modern period of the history of the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy is the period of its international recognition. Further development of the Academy is ensured by the rapid development of educational establishment, opening of new faculties and specialties, training its own scientific and pedagogical staff, the introduction of new progressive forms and methods of work, awareness of the high mission of higher education.
